Nacido en Moravia, Flegel se entrenó bajo un artista flamenco antes de establecerse en el centro mercantil de Frankfurt, donde se especializó en pinturas de comidas aún vivas. Aquí, presenta al espectador con una amplia gama de comida y bebida en un mantel de lino. La yuxtaposición de la carcasa del pajarito en el plato con el pájaro vivo en el pan de pan añade una nota de humor macabre a la escena.
