El coup de grâce será administrado por el jugador a un doe herido en la finca del segundo conde de Clarendon, uno de los últimos patronos de Stubbs. El audífono mantuvo una serie de especies exóticas, así como una manada de tres a cuatrocientos ciervos en su parque cerca de Watford. Bajo un título ligeramente diferente, la pintura fue exhibida en la Real Academia en 1801. La composición triangular es poco común para Stubbs, que generalmente prefirió acuerdos lineales. La mirada enigmática de Freeman es evocadora. Como jugador, seguramente dio testimonio frecuente de momentos de nacimiento y muerte.
