En el primer trimestre del siglo XIX Montmartre era todavía un pintoresco suburbio de París, donde se podían ver unos cuarenta molinos de viento. Michel amaba este tramo de tierra y pintó muchas vistas de él durante su carrera. La observación detallada y la técnica bastante precisa de esta imagen sugieren que se hizo alrededor de 1820.
