Esta escena no se describe en la Biblia, sino que forma parte de la literatura devocional medieval. Cristo mira al espectador, invitando a la meditación sobre su sufrimiento que habitualmente invitaba esa literatura. La imagen parece haber formado la parte central de un pequeño retablo con persianas que sobreviven en Amberes. Estas incluyen las figuras de la Virgen y San Juan Evangelista. Las figuras distantes en los tocados izquierdos recuerdan a principios del siglo XV y parecen haber sido copiadas de una Van Eyck
