Aunque Ter Borch nació en la provincia oriental de Zwolle y realizó su carrera en Deventer cerca de 1654, estaba íntimamente familiarizado con la pintura en Haarlem, Amsterdam y La Haya. También viajó internacionalmente antes de 1650, lo más importante para representar a miembros de los tribunales holandeses y españoles en las negociaciones de paz de 1646 a 48 en Munster. Esta experiencia y su refinado estilo y percepción de carácter hicieron de ter Borch un retrato muy exitoso dentro y alrededor de Deventer. Este retrato fue probablemente pintado allí a finales de 1650.
