En 1664 el célebre escultor romano y arquitecto Gian Lorenzo Bernini participó en un concurso para diseñar la fachada este del palacio del Louvre en París, que el rey Luis XIV deseaba completar. Este dibujo de mano libre muestra la propuesta inicial de Bernini para la fachada, con un pabellón central oval. Los arcos y columnas monumentales se derivan de precedentes clásicos, sin embargo el diseño inusualmente animado de Bernini fue rechazado a favor del plan más convencional de Claude Perrault para una fila lineal de columnas en un pabellón elevado.
