Educado en Inglaterra, John Fenwick comenzó su carrera militar como teniente en los Marines de los Estados Unidos. During the War of 1812 he was wounded in the Battle of Queenstown Heights. Finalmente ganó la comisión de Brevet-Brigadier-General en 1823.
