Este retrato parece haber sido iniciado como un rectángulo y luego cambiado a un formato oval. Es una de las pinturas más virtuosicas de Stuart, claramente desde sus primeros años en Londres, pero tanto su fecha como la identidad de la niñera son desconocidas. El vago y cepillado tratamiento del fondo ha planteado la sugerencia de que el trabajo es inacabado. Sin embargo, parece más bien inspirarse en Thomas Gainsborough, cuyas pinturas el joven americano ciertamente vio y admiraba en Inglaterra. Gainsborough también favoreció los retratos ovalados y colores pastel tan claros como el verde agradable del abrigo del joven niñera.
