Un nativo de Newport, Rhode Island, y el primer primo de Stuart, Joseph Anthony fue entrenado como platero y joyero, su negocio familiar. Anthony se mudó a Filadelfia alrededor de 1783 donde prosperó su comercio, y se casó con Henrietta Hillegas de esa ciudad poco después. Esta imagen, pintada de la mejor manera inglesa de Stuart, captura completamente el estado de ánimo confiado de este artesano sustancial, cuyo aspecto rudo y vestido cuidadoso sugieren éxito y felicidad.
