Además de las vistas de los sitios reales, Canaletto pintó imaginarios (los llamó “vistas ideales”). Muchos datan de principios de 1740, cuando visitó Venecia continental con su sobrino Bernardo Bellotto, quien también exceleró en la pintura de la vista. La originalidad de estas pinturas reside en su diseño abstracto, calidad de luz y combinación de edificios. A diferencia de las vistas convencionales de Canaletto, ninguna de las iglesias, columnas u otras estructuras puede ser identificada.
