Cuando Bacchus llegó a la isla de Naxos, encontró a la hermosa hija de Minos, Ariadne, que había sido abandonada por Theseus. Bacchus se casó con ella y su corona fue transformada en una constelación por Júpiter. En la imagen actual Bacchus, usando hojas de vid en su cabello, coloca un anillo en el dedo de Ariadne. El tema fue tratado por Pellegrini varias veces. El cuadro actual puede datar de después de 1721, tras el regreso de Pellegrini a Venecia y su extenso trabajo en Inglaterra, Düsseldorf, los Países Bajos y París.
