Vestido en sus túnicas profesorales y sombrero de tres bellotas, el académico legal Bartolomeo Bonghi se muestra con un libro sobre derecho civil romano dedicado a él por su autor en 1553. A través de la ventana abierta hay una torre que fue uno de los lugares más identificables de la ciudad de Bérgamo. Moroni fue admirado por todo el norte de Italia por su capacidad de capturar sus sitters "de la vida", o "de la naturaleza", en palabras del artista veneciano Titian. Obras como esta fueron estudiadas sin duda por el joven Caravaggio.
