"Las imágenes descritas en esta pintura son tan sólidamente tridimensionales que parece como si pudieras alcanzarlas y tocarlas; las lágrimas en las caras de las mujeres afligidas parecen caer sobre el espectador. En esta pintura, Giotto ilustra muy bien su capacidad de combinar aspectos de la iconografía tradicional con el realismo impecable por el que era tan famoso. Giotto muestra su talento al envolver la ropa ligeramente sobre el Jesús crucificado, cuyo loncloth se sienta ligeramente sobre su cuerpo, y se envuelve a través de sus piernas mientras su cuerpo se hunde en la cruz. "
