El artista, viviendo una vida de verdadero ascetismo poético en los Alpes suizos, pintó las imágenes de Maternité en los años 1890. Estas pinturas ocupan un lugar particular entre sus monumentales paisajes y escenas montañosas de sensibilidad serena. Los polos opuestos del mal demoníaco y el amor materno devoto aparecen en estos lienzos, que están impregnados con la excitabilidad de finales del siglo XIX Art Nouveau y Simbolismo.
