Esta escultura representa el episodio bíblico en el que Ismael, abandonada por su madre en el desierto, por lo que no tendrá que verlo morir de sed, manchas, habiendo terminado todo el agua en la ánfora detrás de él (Génesis, 21, 8-21). Ishmael fue modelado por Strazza en 1884 en su estudio en Palazzo Venezia, Roma, donde capturó la atención de la ciudad
