El Marqués Luigi Cusani (1592-1659), un político importante, doctor de derecho, defensor general del Regio Fisco, senador en Madrid y luego presidente del Senado, muere sin herederos directos y deja sus bienes materiales al Hospital Maggiore. Tras una controversia planteada por algunos familiares que reclaman la herencia, al final el legado del hospital es pequeño. El retrato es confiado a Giuseppe Nuvolone, hijo de Panfilo y hermano de Carlo Francesco. Artisticamente vive en su hermano
