Gunnar Berndtson es uno de los pocos artistas finlandeses que han asistido a la École des Beaux-Arts en París. Debido a que su familia era de la nobleza y había recibido una educación superior, estaba mejor equipado que muchos de sus colegas finlandeses para adaptarse a la vida cultural en Francia. Fue a París en 1876 y estudió con Léon Gérôme, el pintor de la historia, pero quedó impresionado por Ernst Meissonier, que se especializó en la representación de trajes y ambientes históricos.
