La Académie Suisse fue una escuela de arte parisina informal pero influyente, a la que asistió el joven Courbet a principios de los años 1840. Fue fundada por Martin François Suisse (ca. 1781-1859), el tema de este retrato póstumo. Suisse, él mismo, había sido el modelo para el trabajo de un artista, uno de los raros profesionales en su campo cuyo nombre le sobrevive.
