Varios artistas aventuraron retratos de Mathilde Desportes, incluyendo al popular académico Jean-Jacques Henner (1829-1905), pero su marido, Auguste Cuoq, encontró la mayoría de ellos inaceptables. This likeness was among those he rejected, reportedly because he felt that it did not adequately convey his wife’s beauty. Courbet parece haber terminado el cuadro a su propia satisfacción en 1857, la fecha que lo asignó en el catálogo de la exposición individual que montó en París en 1867.
