Esta pintura, mostrada en el Salón de 1857, representa al tenor Louis Gueymard en su parte más famosa, el título de la ópera de Meyerbeer Robert le Diable. El escenario es la caverna donde Robert juega dados con dos sirvientes del diablo mientras su padre, Bertram, un genio malvado, mira. Robert canta sobre los peligros de la lujuria por el oro en la famosa aria "L'or est une chimère" (Gold es sólo una ilusión). Courbet rechazó los temas historicistas favorecidos por muchos de sus contemporáneos. Pero aquí su abrazo del presente asumió el disfraz de una pieza teatral moderna establecida en la Edad Media.
