El sitter es Hermine Gallia, née Hamburger (1870 - 1936). En 1893 se casó con su tío, Moritz Gallia, un asesor del gobierno que se convirtió en el principal patrón de las artes. En este cuadro lleva un vestido diseñado por Klimt. Existen numerosos dibujos para la composición de este trabajo, y varias alteraciones son visibles a simple vista, gran parte de la figura
