Klimt fue la personalidad más significativa del Art Nouveau austriaco, uno de los fundadores de la Secesión Wiener (1897). Los miembros de este grupo de artistas se caracterizaron por un culto especial de Pallas Athena, la figura de la diosa mitológica apareció en el cartel de su primera exposición, así como en la portada del catálogo (1898). El busto de Pallas Athena también fue puesto en la ex libris de la Secesión Wiener. Esta composición es idéntica al diseño de carteles para la 18a exposición Art Nouveau. Klimt
