Según fuentes bíblicas, Salome aceptó bailar ante su padre, Herodes II, rey de Judea, a cambio de recibir la cabeza cortada de Juan el Bautista. Moreau trató el tema unas quince veces en aceite. La mayoría de estas pinturas se centran en la aparición dramática de la cabeza durante el baile o su presentación después, pero la seducción aquí aparece casi inocente, estirando su cuerpo y mirando lejos de la cabeza sangrienta, que brilla con una luz santa.
