Uno de los dos submarinos comerciantes alemanes, Deutschland llegó por primera vez en Estados Unidos en Baltimore el 9 de julio de 1916. Habiendo cruzado el Atlántico virtualmente vacío, algunos de sus balastos de hierro fueron utilizados para crear medallas conmemorativas, como esta.
