Hans Maler trabajó como pintor de retratos en la ciudad minera de Schwaz, al este de Innsbruck. Las obras de plata de Schwaz pertenecían a las más prósperas de Europa, y Sebastian Andorfer, que se muestra en este retrato a los cuarenta y ocho años, fue uno de sus principales funcionarios. Como Silberbrenner (refinador de plata) fue responsable de garantizar la pureza de la plata de Schwaz, una fuente importante de ingresos para el Archiduque de Habsburgo Ferdinand y la familia Fugger de Augsburgo, cuyas semejanzas Hans Maler también pintaron.
