La primera línea de metro fue inaugurada en París con motivo de la Feria Mundial en París en 1900. Héctor Guimard diseñó las primeras estaciones de metro, utilizando el lenguaje formal de Art Nouveau. Usó materiales industriales como hierro y vidrio para crear estructuras filigranas y transparentes que recuerdan a brotes, tallos y hojas. Las rejillas de hierro fundido, ubicadas en casi todas las entradas de la estación, están decoradas con un escudo de diseño vegetal.
