Estos son Cimon, un hombre sentenciado a muerte por hambre, y su hija Pero, que desafió tanto la ley como el tabú social para salvar la vida de su padre. Grabado por el historiador romano Valerius Maximus, este episodio potencialmente impactante se celebró en Europa del siglo XVII como ejemplo de piedad filial. Ter Brugghen hace hincapié en la solemnidad de la escena al mismo tiempo que insinúa al despertar el peligro mediante la inclusión de una figura de voyeur apenas visible en el fondo.
