Como ilustrador, diseñador y como jefe de una escuela de grabado, Hendrick Goltzius tuvo una influencia notable que precipitaron un cambio de estilo en el arte holandés alrededor de 1600. Goltzius trabajó en Haarlem desde 1575 y alrededor de 1590-1 estudió Renacimiento y Arte Romano Antiguo en Italia. Junto con el artista flamenco Bartholomäus Spranger y su figura mannerista ideal, Goltzius introdujo su estilo elegante en el arte holandés. Además de Jacob Matham, promovió, entre otros, a Jan Saenredam, que reprodujo estos dibujos altamente acabados de las tres diosas por su maestro en una exquisita suite de grabados de cobre, que les dan en reversa.
