Grenier y Lautrec fueron compañeros estudiantes en el taller de París del pintor de historia académica Fernand Cormon durante los años 1880 y se convirtieron en amigos rápidos: Lautrec incluso vivió brevemente con Grenier y su esposa, Lili, una actriz y modelo, e hizo varias presentaciones de la pareja. Una inscripción en el reverso de este retrato indica que fue pintada en el estudio Montmartre de Lautrec en la rue Caulaincourt en 1887. Empleó lavados finos y acuarelas de pigmento, colocados sobre un lápiz fino, para producir un estudio de carácter sensible de su compañero.
