Se dice que un cuaderno guardado por la esposa de Fantin registra las circunstancias que rodean esta imagen. La niñera se llamaba Mme Leroy, un nombre que el artista sospechoso era falso; e insistió en pagar por su retrato de antemano. Ella fue acompañada a algunas de sus sentadas por un americano llamado Becker, quien también comisionó una semejanza de Fantin, fechada el año siguiente (Smith College Museum of Art, Northampton, Mass). Las identidades completas de la pareja, y la naturaleza de su relación, permanecen desconocidas.
