A lo largo de su carrera, Harpignies mantuvo estrechos vínculos con artistas y amigos en su ciudad natal de Valenciennes. También tuvo un estudio en París y en 1883 firmó un contrato con la firma parisina de Arnold y Tripp que le liberó de la gestión y venta de su trabajo. La pintura actual, inspirada en un pasaje de la poesía de Víctor Hugo, fue encargada por los distribuidores del artista, que presentó el lienzo al Museo en 1886. Harpignies trató el tema romántico con una dirección característica, en un estilo influenciado por los pintores Barbizon.
