Nacido en Filadelfia, Benbridge estudió en Londres y en Roma bajo Anton Raphael Mengs y Pompeo Batoni. En 1772, el artista se estableció en Charleston, donde se convirtió en el retrato de moda de la ciudad después de que Jeremías Theus muriera en 1774. Esta miniatura exhibe el estilo de retrato colorido, lineal y crujientemente realista de Benbridge, que es notablemente similar al de John Singleton Copley. A partir de aproximadamente 1770, es uno de los primeros esfuerzos del artista en el medio, sin embargo muestra más refinamiento que una serie de sus obras posteriores. El caso, que se establece con amatistas que coinciden con la cintura de lavanda del caballero, es original a la pieza.
