Janet Halleck Drake fue hija del poeta de Nueva York Joseph Rodman Drake y nombrada por la amiga de su padre, el poeta Fritz Greene Halleck. Tenía unos siete años cuando se sentó para Inman, quien la colocó en un entorno de bosque. El sombrero de la Srta. Drake es algo emblemático del artista, que era conocido por usar uno sobre la ciudad. Inman exhibió el retrato en Nueva York en 1825 y un revisor lo encontró “hermoso. ”
