Tanner fue uno de los pocos artistas afroamericanos para disfrutar del éxito internacional y aclamar durante los últimos siglos XIX y principios del XX. Nacido en Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, estudió con el artista americano Thomas Eakins. Tanner se mudó a Francia debido a prejuicios raciales en los Estados Unidos y logró su carrera allí. Esta vida muerta muestra la influencia del impresionismo francés y del artista postimpresionista Paul Cézanne.
