Van den Anker estudió en la Academia de Rotterdam antes de mudarse a Francia y establecerse en París. Más tarde pasó catorce años en Pont-Aven, donde pintó exteriores y figuras. Aquí, representa a una mujer bretón quintasencial de la vecina ciudad de Riec-sur-Belon. Marie-Anne Herledan (1815-1889) lleva un tocado Pont-Aven y ropa tradicional. El retrato fue encargado por el hijo del modelo, que deseaba honrar a su madre con este retrato formal en un hermoso marco dorado. Este lienzo ilustra el talento del artista, así como su conexión con la tradición realista de los grandes retratos holandeses del siglo XVII
