Butler es reconocido como el fundador de la American Fine Arts Society. Nacido en la ciudad de Nueva York, fue un primer defensor de la recreación de la ciudad y la embellecimiento. Butler convenció a Andrew Carnegie para financiar la construcción de un lago artificial recreativo cerca de la Universidad de Princeton. Originalmente un abogado de patentes, Butler abandonó esta práctica para seguir pintando en 1884.
