Basado en una apuesta con la reina Marie Antoinette, el hermano menor del rey Luis XV, el comte d’Artois, tenía un pabellón de placer construido en las afueras de París en un mero sesenta y cuatro días a través de la labor de más de ochocientos artesanos. Las seis pinturas de Robert de paisajes italianos fueron instaladas en un cuarto de baño elaborado, lo que provocó su tema general del agua. Habiendo pasado once años en Italia, donde fue amigo de Jean Honoré Fragonard y otros artistas franceses en el extranjero, Robert conocía profundamente la arquitectura antigua y la escultura. En esta serie, sin embargo, en lugar de la exactitud anticuaria, combina libremente las fuentes.
