El realismo agudizado de este retrato, sobre todo la barba, es un sello distintivo de la obra de Hugo van der Goes. Al fijar la cabeza del hombre contra un interior oscuro, junto a una ventana brillante, el contraste acentuado de la luz y la sombra aumenta el modelado de las características faciales. El retrato fue cortado posteriormente en forma ovalada de un panel rectangular, que probablemente formó parte de un tríptico devocional. El sitter, con sus manos unidas en oración, dirige su mirada hacia la imagen religiosa desaparecida.
