En esta composición, Bacchiacca, un artista florentino del siglo XVI, cita con astucia las pinturas de los artistas más importantes de la época: la cabeza de la Virgen es muy similar a las de Leonardo da Vinci, y Santa Isabel es modelada después de una figura de Andrea del Sarto. Los colores vibrantes indican claramente que Bacchiacca era consciente del desarrollo del Mannerismo, un estilo de renacimiento tardío caracterizado por un movimiento lejos del realismo hacia una exageración elegante y artística.
