Esbozo preparatorio en tinta negra y pigmento de color mostrando un búho encaramado en una rama de un árbol de arce, rodeado de una multitud de aves pequeñas. Los elementos de este diseño son tradicionales, pero la orientación horizontal es relativamente inusual dentro de las composiciones de Katei. Especialmente cuando se presentaron obras a exposiciones internacionales, los pintores japoneses habían comenzado a adoptar este enfoque, para ajustarse a las expectativas occidentales.
