ISHIKAWA Kangan estudió Nanga tradicional* bajo KOMURO Suiun. Luego estableció su propio estilo original, tomando inspiración de la pintura occidental y el rico entorno natural de su ciudad natal. Su enfoque también se basaba en la técnica de estilo mōrōtai o novato utilizada por YOKOYAMA Taikan entre otros artistas que, como Ishikawa, miraban al arte occidental. En esta pieza, una suavidad distinta envuelve al pastor y a las montañas, algo que no se ve comúnmente en la obra de otros pintores. A pesar de las grandes expectativas de su futuro, Ishikawa falleció a la edad de 46 años.
