En esta pintura, Van Ruisdael capturó la esencia del paisaje holandés. Desde una duna alta, miramos la tierra plana en dirección a Haarlem, la ciudad a la distancia. Por encima de la ciudad se extiende un inmenso cielo con nubes que pasan. Van Ruisdael pinta el sol brillando entre las nubes, alternando luz y sombra. Dirige nuestra mirada en lo profundo de la pintura a lo largo de los parches del sol, desde los campos donde el lino se extiende hacia la iglesia de San Bavo a distancia.
