Este extraordinario retablo —muy expresivo y casi único en mostrar el bautismo de Cristo como un giro noc— es la última obra conocida de Bassano. El gran pintor veneciano lo dejó sin terminar a su muerte en 1592, y sus herederos lo retuvieron durante más de un siglo. Para algunos ojos, el estilo inacabado (no finito) de la pintura parece un paso crucial hacia el modernismo, para ser comparado con, por ejemplo, las “pinturas negras” de Goya. Bassano interpreta el bautismo de Cristo no como un acontecimiento soleado en un paisaje pastoral, sino como la trágica apertura de su pasión.
