En 1590 Ligozzi creó una serie de dibujos elaborados y alegóricos de los Siete Pecados Muertos (seis todavía existen). Esta pintura, que es un fragmento, representa las figuras centrales de la alegoría de Avarice, cuyo dibujo está en la Galería Nacional, Washington. Como se describe en los libros de emblemas, Avarice se muestra como una mujer pálida que sostiene una bolsa de dinero. El esqueleto amenazante sugiere que el artista fue inspirado así por otras representaciones del vicio en la literatura (tal vez Dante) o las artes visuales.
