Constance Macdonald Gilchrist (1865-1946), popularmente conocido como "la original Gaiety Girl", tuvo una exitosa carrera en el escenario de Londres en comedia ligera y vaudeville. Whistler la posó en su estudio mientras apareció en el escenario del teatro Gaiety en el baile de salto-rope. Además de ser un portrtait de la popular joven bailarina, la pintura es un experimento en diseño y color, presentando un diálogo visual entre formas sólidas y patrones decorativos planos.
