Childs Frick tenía casi dos años cuando los Fricks le encargaron este retrato del artista escocés James Archer. Archer viajó a Estados Unidos en 1884, y mientras aquí pintaba un retrato de Andrew Carnegie, industrial de Pittsburgh y socio de negocios de Henry Clay Frick, y este retrato del primer hijo de Frick. El retrato muestra a los niños en un paisaje, usando el tipo de vestido blanco que ambos niños y niñas llevaban cuando eran muy jóvenes. Archer tiene Childs sosteniendo una rosa, que en la era victoriana el lenguaje de las flores significaba pureza y gracia. También se utilizó en el arte americano como símbolo de fecundidad y niños y la continuación de la línea familiar.
