Miembro activo de la segunda generación de pintores escolares del río Hudson, Hart nació en Escocia y se trasladó a Nueva York como niño con sus padres. Estudió en Alemania, luego regresó a los Estados Unidos en 1853 y abrió un estudio en Albany antes de mudarse a Nueva York. Esta pintura, como paisajes de época barroca, domestica y enmarca la naturaleza. Combinando el género y la pintura paisajística, sentimentaliza los placeres de la naturaleza y la vida familiar.
