James Peale entrenó a su hija Anna Claypoole Peale en el arte de pintar retratos en miniatura en acuarela sobre marfil. Comenzó su carrera ayudándole con su trabajo cuando su vista comenzó a fracasar, pero finalmente persiguió al médium por su cuenta, como era, según su padre, "el empleo más adecuado para una dama". Durante su vida, completó más de doscientas miniaturas, incluyendo los dos retratos mostrados aquí. En 1824, ella y su hermana Sarah Miriam Peale fueron elegidos académicos en la Academia de Bellas Artes de Pennsylvania, las primeras mujeres tan honradas.
