Existen varias versiones y copias de esta pintura, de las cuales en el Museo Kunsthistorisches, Viena se considera la primera, o la más cercana a ella.Se cree que el tratamiento original de la composición ha sido ejecutado alrededor de 1527.El texto inscrito alrededor del borde del nicho se basa en el versículo de Génesis 3:15: MVLIERIS SEMEN IHS SERPENTIS CAPVT CONTRIVIT, las palabras de Dios dirigiéndose a la serpiente después de la caída: "[la semilla de la mujer] te herirá la cabeza."Gossaert hace explícita la referencia a Cristo en la forma en que el Niño corre hacia adelante, mientras mira hacia atrás la palabra serpentis.
