Jan Steen se retrató a sí mismo como un artista autoconsciente, decente en negro, con una cortina encubierta en el fondo. Con este tipo de autorretrato siguió el ejemplo de maestros famosos como Titian y Rembrandt. El retrato es una excepción en la obra de Steen. Normalmente se pintaba en el papel de comediante.
